Naming and structuring catalog items

Five conventions that keep your catalog usable as it grows past 200 items.

Five rules that scale.

  1. Customer-facing names. The name appears on quotes; write it for the buyer, not the rep.
  2. Short SKUs. 4-8 characters max. Long SKUs become noise.
  3. One item per offering tier. "Brand audit – starter" and "Brand audit – premium" as separate items, not one with a discount note.
  4. Archive aggressively. Items you haven't sold in 12 months get archived, not deleted. Cleaner picker.
  5. Category trees with max 2 levels. Beyond that, navigation slows down.
